Jeff Buckley takes the Christmas Number 2 Spot

Well, he came close in the end, although if you can call some 400,000 singles behind “close”, well…it was never much of a race for Christmas Number 1. X-Factor, for as long as it exists, will always comandeer the top spot, end of story.

I hadn’t realised though, that Jeff Buckley had got to the top in America due to Jason Castro performing Hallelujah on American Idol. It seems 2008 has been the year of Jeff, only 11 years since he passed away, and people are just starting to discover him. Even if it is because of Simon Cowell.

Jeff would have loved the irony, surely.

Jeff Buckley at Number 3 in the midweek Christmas Chart

Jeff Buckley at Number 3 with Hallelujah

Incredible – this story is just running and running. It seems there is a campaign on Facebook and other social networking sites to get Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah to Number 1. Of course, it’ll never happen, it’d take some amazing feat to overhaul the Alexandra Burke version, but it’s a nice romantic notion to think that it COULD still happen.

Even so, to have Jeff at Number 3 would be quite something. Not sure whether that means we’ll see any more of his material chart – I very much doubt it. I can’t see any X-Factor fans listening to the likes of Mojo Pin, or Jeff Buckley’s cover of Kick out the Jams.

I don’t care, I will just have a warmer feeling this Christmas, it will feel like Jeff is still with us, if only in spirit.

Jeff Buckley Hallelujah in Top 40 Because of X Factor

Jeff Buckley Back in Top 40!

Thank you X-Factor lol

It’s a funny old world. Jeff Buckley in my opinion, is God. And during his career he (thankfully) never quite made it mainstream, which surely would have been of detriment to his career.

So now what happens? Because a Saturday night “talent” show called X Factor decides that this years Christmas Number 1 (cos let’s face it, it will be, unless Terry Wogan can pull a fast one) is going to be one of the greatest songs ever written, Jeff Buckley returns to the Top 40, at Number 30! Allt hanks to Alexandra Burke, and of course Simon Cowell.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s fantastic to see him there, and I’m sure his mother, Mary, will welcome the extra few copies of “Grace” (one of the greatest albums of ALL TIME) that are sold.

Jeff Buckley’s music is beautiful, touching and will live forever. And I guess if more people get to hear it because of X Factor, than that can’t be a bad thing.

You’ll never be forgotten Jeff.
