There will never be another X Factor Christmas Number One

A victory for the common man (and woman) this Christmas, as Rage Against the Machine makes the Christmas Number One in the UK. “Killing in the name of” successfully sold 520,000 copies by download alone, beating Joe McElderry into second place on 450,000 copies. Poor Joe, but congratulations to Rage, and of course the couple who set up the Facebook campaign in the first place. I’m sure Rage’s expletive ridden appearance on Radio 5 won’t have done them much harm, as would the donation of some of the proceeds to Shelter charity….oh and the promised free concert next   year.

This showing of democracy, and victory for grass-roots music begs the question, will we ever see another X Factor Chritsmas Number One? I doubt it – the foot can’t be taken off the gas with this one now…..as long as we don’t see ridiculous songs hitting the top spot…I’m thinking Bucks Fizz here. My early tip though is Rick Astley – surely a reappearance for Rick following his Rick-Rolling Youtube success recently. A word of warning, don’t start thinking that it would be funny to get Mr Blobby back to Number one for Christmas 2010…..Simon Cowell was behind that little ditty too….
